MSEDCL Net Metering Process: 6 Steps Explained

Net metering is what makes on-grid rooftop solar financially worthwhile — it's the billing arrangement that credits you for the surplus power your panels export to the grid. Here's the process broken down into six steps.

Step 1: Application Submission

Once your solar system specifications are finalised, an application is submitted to MSEDCL with details of your proposed installation, inverter capacity and consumer information.

Step 2: Technical Feasibility Review

MSEDCL reviews the application against your sanctioned load and the local grid's capacity to accept exported power in your area.

Step 3: Installation

With feasibility approved, the physical solar installation proceeds (or is completed, if not already done), following safety and technical standards.

Step 4: Inspection

MSEDCL conducts a physical inspection of the completed installation to verify it meets required safety and technical standards before approving the net meter installation.

Step 5: Net Meter Installation

Once inspection is cleared, MSEDCL installs the bi-directional net meter that will track both your grid consumption and solar export going forward.

Step 6: Billing Switches Over

From this point, your electricity billing reflects the net metering arrangement — you're billed for the net electricity drawn from the grid after your solar export is credited.

How Long Does It Take?

Timelines vary with MSEDCL's local workload, but the full process typically takes a few weeks once your installation is inspection-ready. For a deeper look at documentation requirements and how this connects to PM Surya Ghar subsidy disbursal, see our complete MSEDCL net metering guide.
