Residential vs Commercial Solar: Key Differences Explained

While the underlying solar technology is the same, residential and commercial solar installations differ in several important ways — from subsidy eligibility to tariff structure to system design considerations. Here's a clear comparison.

Subsidy and Financial Incentives

Residential systems up to 10 kW are eligible for direct capital subsidy under PM Surya Ghar, up to ₹78,000. Commercial and industrial systems don't receive this direct subsidy; instead, businesses can claim accelerated depreciation on the solar asset under the Income Tax Act, which reduces the effective cost through tax savings over time rather than an upfront grant.

Electricity Tariff Differences

Commercial electricity tariffs in Maharashtra are typically higher than residential rates. This actually works in favour of commercial solar economics, since the "avoided cost" of grid electricity per unit is higher, often leading to shorter payback periods for well-designed commercial systems compared to residential ones of similar relative size.

System Sizing Approach

Residential systems are usually sized to a target bill-offset percentage based on household consumption, typically 2-6 kW. Commercial systems are sized through a more detailed load analysis considering sanctioned load, operating hours and daytime consumption patterns, and can range from 5 kW for a small shop to 100+ kW for larger facilities.

Installation Considerations

Commercial installations often need to account for business continuity during installation, coordination around operating hours, and sometimes more complex electrical integration with existing commercial power infrastructure. Residential installations are generally more straightforward logistically.

Net Metering Applies to Both

Both residential and commercial consumers can access MSEDCL net metering, crediting surplus exported generation against consumption, though eligible capacity and specific terms may differ by consumer category. See our net metering guide for details.
